Two art fairs open inside the same Seoul convention center tomorrow. That sounds simple—until you reach the ticket gate.
Frieze Seoul and Kiaf Seoul both begin on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at COEX in Gangnam. But September 2 is not an ordinary public opening day. Frieze identifies it as invitation-only, while Kiaf's published timetable reserves the day for eligible VIP access.
For most visitors, the useful start time is 3 p.m. on Thursday, September 3. Here is how the two fairs line up, where to go inside COEX and what to check before leaving your hotel.
September 2 Is Opening Day—Not a General Walk-In Day
The date on the poster and the date on your ticket are not necessarily the same thing.
Frieze Seoul's official visitor FAQ says its first preview on September 2 runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and is invitation-only. Kiaf's schedule lists VIP access on September 2, including a joint Kiaf-and-Frieze window from 3 p.m.; its ordinary general-admission table shows no public option that day.
That means travelers should not read “opens September 2” as “buy a regular ticket at the door on September 2.” Check the exact access category printed on your ticket or pass.
One COEX, Two Fairs, Different Finish Lines
The fairs share a venue and overlap for four days, but they are not interchangeable events.

Kiaf's extra Sunday is the easiest detail to miss. If Saturday tickets or travel plans are tight, September 6 still offers a Kiaf-only general-admission day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Frieze will already have closed.
Your Ticket May Cover Both—but Read the Entry Window
Frieze says every Frieze Seoul ticket or membership purchased for the fair includes entry to both Frieze Seoul and Kiaf Seoul. Its current ticket page lists full-price single-day options by time window, including first-access and afternoon-access tickets, as well as multi-day memberships.
That does not make every ticket valid at every hour. A Thursday public ticket beginning at 3 p.m., for example, does not create morning preview access. Prices and availability can also change as inventory sells, so the official sales page—not a screenshot or resale listing—should be the final check.
Kiaf also publishes separate categories for joint access, Kiaf-only access, preview entry and special-discount entry. Match three things before buying: fair access, calendar date and permitted arrival time.

COEX sits in eastern Gangnam. Frieze recommends three subway approaches:
- Samseong Station, Line 2: Exits 5 or 6
- Bongeunsa Station, Line 9: Exits 1, 6 or 7
- Cheongdam Station, Line 7: Exit 2, followed by roughly a 10–15 minute walk
For Frieze, the North Gate or West Gate gives the most direct approach before heading to Level 3. Once inside, do not follow signs for “COEX Mall” and assume you have reached the exhibition halls; the complex is large enough for that mistake to cost real viewing time.
If you plan to see both fairs, allow a pause between levels. The shared location makes a same-day visit possible, but the combined scale is closer to an endurance event than a quick gallery stop.
Pack Light: Frieze Has a 40 × 20 × 40 cm Bag Limit
Frieze's visitor rules allow backpacks no larger than 40 × 20 × 40 centimeters, and backpacks must be carried by hand rather than worn inside the fair. Suitcases and oversized bags are restricted. Bag checks take place at entry.
The fair is also cashless, so bring a working payment card. Last admission to Frieze is 6:30 p.m., 30 minutes before its 7 p.m. close. Arriving at 6:31 p.m. is not a clever way to fit the fair between dinner reservations.
Travel rules deserve a separate check. Visa and K-ETA requirements vary by nationality and passport; use the Korean government's official immigration guidance for your own passport rather than relying on a general travel post.
What Makes the 2026 Edition More Than a Market Floor
Frieze says its fifth Seoul edition brings together more than 125 galleries from 30 countries, with over 70 percent of participants based in the Asia-Pacific region. Its 2026 program extends into performance, film, music and talks.
Inside COEX, the collaborative Kiaf Seoul x KAMS x Frieze Seoul Talks run September 3–5 at Studio 159 and are described by Frieze as open to the public. Program highlights also include the Frieze Seoul Artist Award commission by Seoul-based collective Yagwang and a moon-jar presentation featuring 15 Korean artists.
Kiaf, established in 2002 as South Korea's first international art fair, frames its 2026 edition around the theme “Coexistence.” The fair says the theme considers human creativity and perception alongside rapidly changing technology.
Turn the Fair Visit Into a Seoul Art Week Route
COEX is the center of attention, not the boundary of the event. The fairs sit inside Seoul Art Week 2026, which runs from August 31 through September 6 across 141 participating spaces and 159 exhibitions and programs.
The practical strategy is to keep fair day and neighborhood day separate. Spend one day at COEX, then choose one district—such as Cheongdam, Hannam, Samcheong or Euljiro—for galleries and late programs. Crossing Seoul repeatedly just to add more pins to a map usually means seeing less art, not more.

- Your access date: September 2 requires the appropriate invitation, VIP pass or premium access.
- Your entry time: public admission begins September 3 at 3 p.m.; other windows depend on ticket type.
- Your fair's final day: Frieze ends September 5, while Kiaf continues September 6.
- Your hall: Frieze is upstairs in C and D; Kiaf is primarily downstairs in A and B, with the Grand Ballroom also listed.
- Your bag and payment method: stay within the Frieze size rule and bring a card.
The two-fair opening gives Seoul a clean headline on September 2. For visitors, the better question is not simply “When does it open?” It is “When does my ticket let me in?” Answer that before you board the subway, and the rest of the week becomes much easier to enjoy.
